(d) The two international strategies pursued to date are through organic growth (the stores in North America) and acquisition (the
companies in Germany and Italy). Neither seems to have worked. Here there seem to be some contradictions while global
tastes and lifestyles are argued to have developed – convergence of consumer tastes lies at the heart of this – but this does
not seem to have benefited Churchill. One questions the learning that these two unfortunate experiences have created. Of the
three core methods of achieving growth, namely organic, acquisition and joint venture, only joint venture remains to be tried.
The reasons for the international failures are clearly complex but one could argue that the strategy has been curiously na?ve.
Certainly, it has pursued a high-risk strategy. Exporting, perhaps through identifying a suitable partner, might create the
learning to lead to a more significant market entry. There is a need to understand local tastes; indeed the whole of the
marketing mix in the chosen market(s), and decide on appropriate strategy. A strategy based upon the acquisition of
companies and their consequent development represents a large investment of capital and requires considerable managerial
attention and expertise. Equally, the attempt to use the Churchill domestic format of opening its own stores creates both a
major financial commitment and the need to manage a radically different operation. One must seriously question whether
Churchill has these capabilities within a family-owned business. Clearly there are differences between the ice cream markets
in various countries, though the emergence of global brands suggests some convergence of tastes. Such differences reflect
differing cultures, tastes and competitive behaviour in each country. The lesson from Churchill’s international initiatives is that
national differences need to be carefully understood. There is little evidence that Churchill has understood these differencesor indeed learnt from them.

During the year the internal auditor of Mulligan Co discovered several discrepancies in the inventory records. In a

statement made to the board of directors, the internal auditor said:

‘I think that someone is taking items from the warehouse. A physical inventory count is performed every three months,

and it has become apparent that about 200 boxes of flat-packed chairs and tables are disappearing from the

warehouse every month. We should get someone to investigate what has happened and quantify the value of the

    loss.’

    Required:

    (c) Define ‘forensic accounting’ and explain its relevance to the statement made by the internal auditor.

    (5 marks)

    (c) Forensic accounting is where an assurance provider investigates a specific issue, often with a legal consequence, such as a
suspected fraud. Specifically it is the process of gathering, analysing and reporting on data for the purpose of finding facts
and/or evidence in the context of financial/legal disputes and/or irregularities. The forensic accountant will also give
preventative advice based on evidence gathered. This advice is based usually on recommendations to improve the internal
control systems to prevent and detect fraud.
The relevance here is that Webb & Co are likely to be asked to provide a forensic accounting service to Mulligan Co.
The investigation will consider two issues – firstly whether the fraud actually happened, and secondly, if a fraud has taken
place, the financial value of the fraud. The investigation should determine who has perpetrated the fraud, and collect evidence
to help prosecute those involved in the deception.
In this case the suspicion that inventory is being stolen should be investigated, as there could be other reasons for the
discrepancy found in the inventory records. For example, the discrepancy could be caused by:
    – Obsolete or damaged inventory thrown away but not eliminated from the inventory records
    – Despatches from the warehouse not recorded in the inventory management system
    – Incoming inventory being recorded incorrectly (e.g. recorded twice in the inventory management system)
    – Inventory being held at a separate location and therefore not included in the count.
If it is found that thefts have taken place, then the forensic accountant should gather evidence to:
    – Prove the identity of the persons involved
    – Quantify the value of inventory taken.
The evidence gathered could be used to start criminal proceedings against those found to have been involved in the fraud.

Ice Cream Taster Has Sweet Job

John Harrison has what must be the most wanted job in the United States. He’s the official taster for Edy’s Grand Ice Cream, one of the nation’s best-selling brands. Harrison’s taste buds are insured for $1 million. ___1___ And when he isn’t doing that, he travels, buying Edy’s in supermarkets all over the country so that he can check for perfect appearance, texture, and flavor.
After I interviewed Harrison, I realized that the life of an ice cream taster isn’t all Cookies ’n Cream — a flavor that* he invented, by the way. No, it’s extremely hard work, which requires discipline and selflessness.
For one thing, he doesn’t swallow on the job. Like a coffee taster, Harrison spits. Using a gold spoon to avoid “off” flavors, he takes a small bite and moves it around in his mouth to introduce it to all 9,000 or so taste buds. ___2___ Then he breathes in gently to bring the aroma up through the back of his nose. Each step helps Harrison evaluate whether the ice cream has a good balance of dairy, sweetness, and added ingredients 一 the three-flavor components of ice cream. Then, even if the ice cream tastes heavenly, he puts it into a trash can. A full stomach makes it, impossible to judge the quality of the flavors.
During the workweek, Harrison told me that he has to make other sacrifices, too: no onions, garlic, or spicy food, and no caffeine. Caffeine will block the taste buds, he says, so his breakfast is a cup of herbal tea. ___3___
Harrison’s family has been in the ice cream business in one way or another1 for four generations, so Harrison has spent his entire life with it2. However, he has never lost his love for its cold, creamy sweetness. ___4___ On these occasions3, he does swallow, and he eats about a quart (0.95 liters) each week. By comparison4, the average person in the United States eats 23.2 quarts (21. 96 liters) of ice cream and other frozen dairy products each year.
Edy’s ice cream is available in dozens of flavors. So what flavor does the best-trained ice-cream taster in the country prefer? Vanilla! In fact, vanilla is the best-selling variety in the United States. ___5___ “It’s a very complex flavor,” Harrison says.

    taste bud 味蕾
    texture /'tekst /a/ n. 质地
    aroma / 'r um / n. 芳香
    vanilla /v 'ml / n. 香草

    2. has spent his entire life with it:为此他已付出一生。
    3. on these occasions:
    4. by comparison:

A However, you should never call it plain vanilla.
B He even orders ice cream in restaurants for dessert.
C Next he smack-smack-smacks his lips to get some air into the sample.
D This is a small price to pay for what he calls the world’s best job.
E In his younger days, he would help out at the ice cream factory his uncle owned.
F He gets to sample 60 ice creams a day at Edy’s headquarters in Oakland, California.

In the past few decades,“generation gap” has become a quite popular phrase, signifying the barrier between parents and children. But what has caused the barrier, why do people living together disagree with each other? Write a composition of about 400 words on the following topic:Who Has Dug The Generation Gap? In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Who Has Dug the Generation Gap? Since its invention, the phrase generation gap has spread all over the world in almost an instant. In the past few decades, although human beings are striving toward more common goals, the gap between parents and children seems to be widening. It is high time that we thought about the causes of this prevailing trouble.
The most important reason is that parents and children hold different values. With the constant development of technology, social values are also undergoing continuous changes. Because parents and children belong to quite different times, they naturally belong to different value groups, and this in turn leads to the barrier between different generations. For example, our parents living in the 1960s think that people should cherish their membership in their groups, and should adapt themselves to their groups, but we emphasize individual values and are ready to leave our groups at any moment in search of a better one. It is unlikely for people holding different values to agree on everything in life, and the barrier is, therefore, also unavoidable.
Another important reason for the generation barrier is lack of communication. A good talk can sometimes dissolve the disagreement between people with different values, but the trouble is that there is not enough communication. With the ever increasing pressure in work and life, parents are spending less effort and time with children; the children, faced with heavy study load or various distractions such as IV plays and computer games, are also spending less time with their parents. This results in a lack, or an inability, of communication when it is necessary.
Besides these two general reasons, there may be some special cases. According to a recent report, about 5 per cent of generation gap results from irresponsible parents. Some parents, especially those without good education, tend to evade the duty of raising and caring their children. The same report also reveals that about 3 percent of the problem results from problematic children who consistently refuse parents~ help. This type of cases represents only a small portion, but the problem is often more serious.
In a word, except for some special cases, barriers come into being either because the two parties involved embrace too different values or because they are not talking to each other often enough. After finding out the reasons, we may know that it is wrong to blame parents or children for the barriers, and we should mainly encourage communication, for if parents and children can talk to each other more, barriers will have less opportunity to stay.

With the rapid development of world economy, energy problem has become a heated issue confronted by many nations. Many people are worrying that one day all the energy would run out and nothing but waste is left to future generations. Write a composition of about 400 words with the following title, giving your suggestions on the solutions of energy problem.HOW TO SOLVE THE ENERGY PROBLEMIn the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

HOW TO SOLVE THE ENERGY PROBLEM Energy is one of the biggest problems people are faced with today. Many people are afraid that the amount of our natural resources is very limited, and that if we use it at the present rate, the world is most likely to run out of oil, coal and metals, and to run short of food in the near future. Since this will lead to a serious energy crisis and thus threaten mankind's survival, it is urgent to take effective measures to solve this problem.
The majority of people respond to the problem with a clamor for more severe conservation of our natural resources. It is necessary because much of our energy in the form of oil, coal, iron, gas, electricity, food and the like has been wasted prodigally in the industrial and personal consumption. In some countries, this waste becomes habitual and traditional, to the extent that people are seldom aware of it in their daily life and prone to think of natural resources as inexhaustible. So it is argued that ff all people realize that wastefulness in dealing with these natural resources means that we will leave our descendents a devastated world, and if all people make serious efforts to practice conservation in using energy, the present drain on the limited and irreplaceable resources will certainly slow down.
But conservation alone is not all the answer. Another and perhaps the best way to solve the energy problem is to develop new sources of energy. It is obvious that even if we can save much energy by using it carefully, we probably cannot avoid using up certain natural resources in the future. However abundant the mineral wealth of the country may be, it does not reproduce itself. When the resources are gone, they are gone forever and are bound to be exhausted ultimately. Practicing conservation can only delay the energy crisis, but cannot solve it completely. In the long run, we must try to develop substitutes such as solar energy, nuclear energy and so on. We must find new supplies in unexplored areas such as new kinds of food in the ocean and new kinds of power on other planets.
Human beings are by nature optimistic. Faced with the approach of energy crisis, we certainly should live a new life based on conservation not waste and even practice a rational system ff necessary. But the best solution would be to spend our money and energy on developing new natural resources.

Poetry has been called “the best words in the best order.” Poets choose words carefully and put them in specificrelationships to each other. Every word in a poem is an important part of the whole design.
A poem is not just the work and joy of the poet. You, the reader, must participate. Your ear must hear the poem’s “music.” Your eye must see how the poem looks on the page. Your mind must find images and meaning in the poem.
