2.CPacing and PausingSara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style. but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in--and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.That's why slight differences in conversational style--tiny little things like microseconds of pause-can have a great effect on one's life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems---even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.64. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?A. Betty was talkative.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.

    Going Her Own Way

When she was twelve,Maria made her first important decision about the course of her life. She decided
that she wanted to continue her education. Most girls from middle-class families chose to stay at home after
primary school, though some attended private Catholic"finishing"schools. There they learned a little about
music, art, needlework, and how to make polite conversation. This was not the sort of education that interested
Maria-or her mother. By this time, she had begun to take her studies more seriously. She read constantly
and brought her books everywhere. One time she even brought her math book to the theater and tried to study
    in the dark.
Maria knew that she wanted to go on learning in a serious way. That meant attending the public high
school, something that very few girls did.In Italy at the time, there were two types of high schools:the
"classical"schools and the"technical"schools. In the classical schools, the students followed a very tradi-
tional program of studies, with courses in Latin and Greek language and literature, and Italian literature and
history. The few girls who continued studying after primary school usually chose these schools.
Maria, however, wanted to attend a technical school. The technical schools were more modern than the
classical schools and they offered courses in modern languages, mathematics, science, and accounting. Most
people一including Maria's father一believed that girls would never be able to understand these subjects.
Furthermore, they did not think it was proper for girls to study them.
Maria did not care if it was proper or not.Math and science were the subjects that interested her most.
But before she could sign up for the technical school, she had to win her father's approval. She finally did,
with her mother's help, though for many years after, there was tension in the family. Maria's father continued to
oppose her plans, while her mother helped her.
In 1883,at age thirteen,Maria entered the"Regia Scuola Tecnica Michelangelo Buonarroti"in Rome.
Her experience at this school is difficult for us to imagine.Though the courses included modern subjects, the
teaching methods were very traditional. Learning consisted of memorizing long lists of facts and repeating
them back to the teacher. Students were not supposed to ask questions or think for themselves in any way.
Teachers were very demanding;discipline in the classroom was strict;punishment was severe for those who
failed to achieve or were disobedient.

We can infer from this passage that__________.
A:girls usually attended private primary schools
    B:only girls attended classical schools
C:girls did not like going to school
D:Maria was a girl who had very strong will

    答案:D
由文章第三段第一句话“Maria, however, wanted to attend a technical school.”
由文章第一段第三句话“Most girls from middle-class families chose to stay at home afterprimary school...”
由文章第三段倒数第二句话“Most people including Maria' s father believed that girls would never be able to understand these subjects.”

Lucky is the man who has no "skeleton in his closet". When a man has done something in his life that he is ashamed of, that he wants to hide, he is said to have a "skeleton in his closet". Some people may have more than one skeleton.
As we have noted many times, it is hard to find out how these expressions begin. Sometimes, we get some hard facts. But more often we have to depend on guesswork. And that is true of this phrase, which came from England.
Before 1932, English law did not permit a doctor to cut open a dead human body for scientific examination, unless it was the corpse (尸体) of an executed (处决) criminal.
But when it became legal, more and more doctors demanded skeletons for a more scientific study of medicine. It was helping in the advance of modern medicine. The demand had become so strong that men began to rob tombs and sell skeletons to doctors at high prices.
We are told that a doctor would usually buy just one skeleton for scientific study. It became very important in his work. But he had to keep it hidden because most people objected to keeping such a thing. As a rule, the doctor would keep his skeleton in some dark corner where it could not be seen, or hide it in a closet.
After a time, people began to suspect (怀疑) every doctor of hiding a skeleton in the closet. From this suspicion, the phrase "a skeleton in the closet" took on a broader, more general meaning to describe anything that a man wanted to keep others from discovering. It could be proof of a criminal act, or something much less serious. Well, that is one theory.
One writer, however, believes that the phrase might have come from something that really happened. It is his guess that a hidden closet in some old English country home may have turned up a real skeleton, clear proof of some old family shame or crime. Well, one man’s guess is as good as another. But this sounds like a story by the great French novelist, Balzac.
Baizac tells us of a man who suspected his wife of having a lover. The husband comes home by surprise. But she hears him and quickly hides her lover in the closet of her bedroom. He enters her room and asks her if she is hiding her lover. He says he will not open the door to the closet if she promises him there is no one there; He will believe her. She answers firmly that she is not hiding anyone in the closet.
The husband then begins to build a solid brick wall against the closet. His wife watches, knowing that her lover will never come out alive. But she will not change her story and admit her guilt. From the text we know that there are () theories about how the phrase "skeleton in the closet" came into being.

    Passage Five

In America, every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver's education.

The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practice driving. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes, one on the driver's side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over.

After a student has passed the driver's education course and reached the appropriate age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), he must take his driver's test. The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver's license. If the person does well in his or her driver's education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver's license.

    Passage 1
Kimberley Asselin sits in a rocking chair in front of her 22kindergartners, a glistening smile across her face as she greets them for themorning. Even at 9 a.m., she is effervescent and charismatic.
Yet behind Asselin′s bright expression, her enthusiasm is fading.
Asselin,24, is days away from finishing her first year as a teacher, the career of her dreams since shewas a little girl giving arithmetic lessons on a dry-erase board to her stuffed bears and dolls.

While she began the school year in Virginia′s Fairfax County full of optimism, Asselin nowfinds herself, as many young teachers do, questioning her future as an educator. What changed in themonths between August and June She says that an onslaught of tests that she′s required to give toher five-and six-year-old students has brought her down to reality.
"It′ s more than a first-year teacher ever imagines," Asselin said."You definitely have a lot ofhighs and lows, and it keeps going up and down and up and down."
New federal data that the Education Department released in April shows that about 10 percent ofnew teachers leave the profession within the first year on the job, and 17 percent leave within five yearsof starting. Though far lower than earlier estimates, it still means that many young educators bail fromthe classroom before they gain much of a foothold. For Asselin, testing has been the biggest stressor.
The proliferation of testing in schools has become one of the most contentious topics in U.S.education. The exams can alter the course of a student′s schooling and can determine whether ateacher is promoted or fired. In Virginia, schools earn grades on state-issued report cards based onthe scores students earn on mandatory end-of-year exams.
The Fairfax County school system, one of the nation′s largest, boasts that its kindergartenstudents take part in coursework that exceeds the state′ s standards. Unlike most states, Virginia hasnever adopted the Common Core State Standards, but Virginia officials say that the state′ s academicstandards are just as--or more--rigorous.
Asselin said that means that even the youngest students in public school are trader an academicmicroscope, making kindergarten about far more than socialization and play time.
Why does Asselin question her future as an educator in less than a year′ s time

A.It is a common practice for American young teachers.

B.She has experienced too many highs and lows in her work.

C.It is totally beyond her expectation to give kids endless test.

D.She has grown tired of greeting her kindergartners every day.

结合第三段最后一句“She says that all onslaught oftests that she’s required to give to her five.and six-year.old studentshas brought her down to reality.和第四段第一句It’s more than Afirst-yearteache rever imagines”可知.

Do friends of the opposite gender distract teenagers, hampering their academic performance? It may seem obvious, and yet it is hard to prove.A survey of American schoolchildren conducted in 1995,for example, suggests no link between the proportion of a girl's friends who were boys and her grades.A new paper by Andrew Hill of the University of South Carolina, however, comes to a different result. He finds that for every 10%more children of the opposite sex among a student's friends, his or her grade-point average(GPA)declines by O.l(GPAs range from O t0 4).Not only may having more friends of the opposite sex be bad for grades, but it has other effects, too.Among the children from the original survey who were successfully re-interviewed 14 years later, those whose grades had been dragged down by friends of the opposite gender were more likely to be married.

    Maria's father probably__________.
A:had very modern views about women
    B:had traditional views about women
    C:had no opinion about women
D:thought women could not learn Latin

    答案:B
由文章第三段第一句话“Maria, however, wanted to attend a technical school.”
由文章第一段第三句话“Most girls from middle-class families chose to stay at home afterprimary school...”
由文章第三段倒数第二句话“Most people including Maria' s father believed that girls would never be able to understand these subjects.”

    AIDS

The World Health Organization(WHO)says as many as 10 million persons worldwide
may have the virus that causes AIDS(艾滋病).Experts believe about 350, 000 persons
have the disease. And one million more may get it in the next five years. In the United
States, about 50,000 persons have died with AIDS.The country's top medical official
says more than 90 percent of all Americans who had the AIDS virus five years ago are
    dead.
There is no cure for AIDS and no vaccine(疫苗)or medicine to prevent it. However,
researchers know much more about AIDS than they did」ust a few years ago.We now know
that AIDS is caused by a virus. The virus invades healthy cells, including white blood cells
that are part of our defense system against disease. It takes control of the healthy cell's
genetic material and forces the cell to make a copy of the virus. The cell then dies. And the
virus-caused particles move on to invade and kill more healthy cells.
The AIDS virus is carried in a person's body fluids. The virus can be passed sexually or
by sharing instruments used to take intravenous(进入静脉的)drugs. It also can be passed
in blood products or from a pregnant woman with AIDS to her developing baby.
Many stories about the spread of AIDS are false. You cannot get AIDS by working or
attending school with someone who has the disease. You cannot get it by touching drinking
glasses or other objects used by such persons.Experts say no one has gotten AIDS by
living with, caring for or touching an AIDS patient.

    M: Hi, Sarah, what’s up?
W: Oh, hi. I just got out of a history class. I had to give a presentation.
    M: How did it go?
W: Terribly. I’m sure I made a fool of myself.
    M: why? Weren’t you prepared?
W: No, it’s not that. [1] I just get so embarrassed and nervous whenever I’ve to speak in front of a group of people. I stand up and my face gets red and then I get even more nervous because I know everybody can see me blushing.
M: It’s not so bad to blush.
W: But it happens all the time. If the professor asks a question and I know the answer, I’ll blush like crazy if he calls on me. Doesn’t that ever happen to you?
M: No, not really. [2] Maybe you should forget about the people. Look at something else in the room, like the exit sign.
W: I guess I could try that. But I doubt it will help.
M: You know we talked about this in psychology class. Blushing, even though it is involuntary, is more or less a learned behavior.
    W: What do you mean?
M: [3] Oh, children hardly ever blush at all. And, among adults, supposedly women blush more than men.
    W: I wonder why.
M: I don’t know why either. [4] Why don’t you use me as your audience when you’ve got an oral presentation in class next time?
W: Good idea. Thank you. Well, I’ve got to get going for my next class. I’ll talk to you later.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
    1. What was the woman’s problem?
    2. Why might looking at the exit sign help the woman?
    3. What does the man say about children?
    4. What does the man suggest the woman do?

    B

it was the possibility of losing her business that gave Helena more concern

    A

    one

    two

    C

    D
