4.If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a big problem. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what the parent expects, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children. However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a reasonable way, the child may succeed in doing very well—especially if the parents are very supportive of their child. Michael Lee Chao Tin is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers a week for violin lessons. Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music, Michael’s father is a good trumpet player. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling. Michael’s friend, Winston Chiu Fang Weng, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was your age, I used to win every competition I entered,” Winston’s father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.61.Which of the following mistakes are parents likely to make according to the passage?A.To neglect their child’s education.B.To help their child to be a genius.C.To expect too much of their child.D.To make their child become a musician.62.What should parents do in order to help their children succeed?A.They should push the children into achieving a lot.B.They should try to have their own successful careers.C.They should arrange private lessons for their children.D.They should understand and help their children in difficult times.63.Which of the following statements about Michael Lee’s parents is true?A.His father is a very poor player of trumpet.B.His parents are quite rich and have a car.C.His parents help him in a proper way.D.His mother knows much about music.64.Winston’s parents push their son so much that __________.A.he has succeeded in a lot of competitionsB.he is unhappy because he is not self-confidentC.he feels he cannot learn anything about music from themD.he has already become a better musician than his father65.The two examples illustrate the principle that __________.A.successful parents often have unsuccessful childrenB.it is important to let children develop in the way they wantC.parents who want their child to be musical should also be good musiciansD.the more money spent on a child’s education, the better the child will do

When we talk about intelligence we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows to do.

For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can do, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it all works out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook in life, a special feeling about life, and a special way of how he fits into it.

If you look at children, you’ll see a great difference between what we call ”bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life—he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general

1、According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to______.

A、work by oneself do well in any

    B、situation

C、know what is right and wrong

D、adapt oneself to a new situation

2、In a new situation, an intelligent person ____________.

A、knows more about what might happen to him

    B、is well-prepared for his action

C、pays greater attention to the situation

    D、completely ignores himself

3、If an intelligent person failed, he would ________

    A、feel ashamed about the failure

    B、learn from his experiences

C、find out what he can’t do

    D、make sure what’s wrong with

    his outlook in life

    4、An intelligent child ________

    A、learns more about himself

B、shows interest in things around him

C、studies everything that may be interesting

    D、looks down upon unintelligent children

5、Why does an unintelligent child seem to have a wall between him and life in general?

A、Because he can hardly see the outside world.

B、Because life is far away from him.

C、Because he knows nothing about life in general.

D、Because he has little interest in things around himself.

    “Lucky” Lord Lucan一Alive or Dead
On 8th November 1974 Lord Lucan,a British aristocrat, vanished. The day before, his children's nanny had been brutally murdered and his wife had been attacked too.To this day the British public are still interested in the murder case because Lucan has never been found.
Now,over 30 years later, the police have reopened the case, hoping that new DNA tech-niques will help solve this murder mystery. People suspected that“Lucky”,as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lucan entered his old house and in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake. His estranged wife heard noises, came downstairs and was also attacked, but managed to escape. Seven months after the murder,a jury concluded that Lucan had killed the nanny.
What happened next is unclear, but there are several theories which fall into one of three categories:he may have killed himself,he could have escaped or he might have been killed. It appears that the night after the murder,“Lucky” borrowed a car and drove it,Lucan's friend Aspinall said in an interview that he thought Lucan had committed suicide by sinking his boat in the English Channel.
Another version of events says that“Lucky” left the blood-soaked car on the coast and took a ferry to France. He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country. However, after a time, his rescuers became worried that they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.
A further fascinating theory was made in the book Dead Lucky by Duncan MacLaugh-lin,a former detective. He believes that Lucan travelled to Goa,India.where he assumed the identity of a Mr. Barry Haplin. Lucan then lived in Goa till his death in 1996.In the end the claim turned out be a case of mistaken identity. The man who died in 1996 was really Haplin,an exschoolteacher turned hippy. So what is the truth about Lucky?DNA testing has solved many murder cases, but who knows if it can close the book on this one.

It is thought that Lucan killed the nanny because______.
A: she was looking after the children
    B: she was a friend of Lucan's
C: it was dark and he thought she was Lady Lucan
D: Lord Lucan thought the nanny stole his car

To this day the British public(与题干中的名词短语the public呼应)are still interested in the murder case because Lucan has never been found.
利用题干及选项中的名词及名词短语作为定位线索,顺着上一题相关句的位置往下查找相关句,这样在第二段中找到相关句:People suspected that “Lucky”(指Lucan), as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lu-can entered his old house and in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake.
It appears that the night after the murder,“Lucky”(指Lucan)borrowed a car and drove it,Lucan's friend Aspinall said in an interview that he thought Lucan had com-mitted suicide by sinking his boat in the English Channel.
Another version of events says that “Lucky” left the blood-soaked car on the coast and took a ferry to France. He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country. However, after a time, his rescuers became worried that they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.

Practice 4 Charles Darwin didn’t want to murder God, as he once put it. But he did. He didn’t want to defy his fellow Cantabrigians, his gentlemanly Victorian society, his devout wife. But he did. He waited 20 years to publish his theory of natural selection, but—fittingly, after another scientist threatened to be first—he did. Before Darwin, most people accepted some version of biblical creation. Humans were seen as the apotheosis of godly architecture. Humans could thus be an accident of natural selection, not a direct product of God. Worries about how much his theory would shake society exacerbated the strange illnesses he suffered. It’s also worth noting that Darwin’s life wasn’t Darwinian: he achieved his wealth through inheritance, not competition, and some might say his sickly children suffered because they were inbred. Darwin’s theories still provoke opposition. One hundred and forty years after The Origin of Species, backers of creationism have made a comeback in states like Kansas, pushing evolution out of the schoolroom. Yet Darwinism remains one of the most successful scientific theories ever promulgated. There is hardly an element of humanity—not capitalism, not gender relations, certainly not biology—that can be fully understood without its help.

    Open Letter to an Editor

I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently---one who works for you. In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.

Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume (简历) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.

So why is he looking for a way out?

He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.

The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.

He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?

So your reporter has set me thinking.

Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists---everyone--is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can't do it, they'll find someone who can.

    60. What does the writer think of the reporter?

    B. Imaginative.

Lucan could have been killed because people______.
A: didn't want the police to catch him
B: thought he might talk to the police about them if he was caught
    C: were unhappy with him
    D: thought he was rich

To this day the British public(与题干中的名词短语the public呼应)are still interested in the murder case because Lucan has never been found.
利用题干及选项中的名词及名词短语作为定位线索,顺着上一题相关句的位置往下查找相关句,这样在第二段中找到相关句:People suspected that “Lucky”(指Lucan), as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lu-can entered his old house and in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake.
He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country. However, after a time, his rescuers became worried that they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.

Which of the following is TRUE about Socrates’s life?( )

A.The legend of his wife is well-grounded.
B.He never thought he was the wisest man in Greece.
C.His intellectual powers come from various doctrines.
D.He was titled the wisest man due to his awareness of ignorance.
