2.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.①The long summer holidays are finally over and some parents are pleased. “We worry more about their safety in the holidays,” explains one mother from North London. If teenagers are not wandering around on public transport in a big and potentially dangerous city, they are chatting to strangers in an internet chat room! Well, that’s an extreme picture of the UK today, but many parents are worried about how much freedom they can give their children during the holidays and at weekends.②Weekends are not the only time to worry! Newspaper are full of stories about too many school kids going to school by car because their parents do not want them to travel alone on a bus or train. This summer there were more frightening stories of teenagers disappearing with questionable friends that they met on the net. All the Media stories help increase parents fears, but is the UK really so dangerous?③Many young people feel that life for their parents was easier. In the 1960s young people played in the streets more and traveled around town without their parents. “At least our parents can keep tabs on us(keep a tab/tabs on sth/sb>>keep account of , keep under observation),” says 16-year-old Julia. “So many people have mobile phones now and their parents ring to find out where they are. I use my mobile to get Dad to come to the station when I arrive late.” Mobiles are not just expensive toys; they help keep young people safe. Most significantly, they make parents feel better. Only one problem is, though, that some young people have been attacked by thieves who want to steal their mobile phones.④Young people like going out with friends, but they now need to learn how to get home safely. Five million young people in the UK between the ages of 9 to 16 use chat rooms to make friends, but they, too, need to be careful and never give their personal details to a stranger. Young people today have more opportunities to meet new people and go out at night more than their parents ever did. Now school, television programs and newspapers must help teenagers to enjoy their freedom and to be responsible for their own safety.31. Some parents are upset about the summer holidays mainly because their children ______.A. wander around on bus in the cityB. chat to strangers in Internet chat roomsC. make questionable friends on the netD. are taken little care of by teachers

    Lakes,Too,Feel Global Warming

There's no doubt:In the last few decades, the average temperature on Earth has been higher than it has
been in hundreds of years.Around the world, people are starting to measure the effects of global warming一
and trying to figure out what to do about it.
Scientists recently used satellites to study the temperatures of lakes around the world, and they found
that lakes are heating up.Between 1985 and 2009,satellites recorded the nighttime temperatures of the sur-
faces of 167 lakes.During those 24 years, the lakes got warmer by an average of about 0.045 degree
    Celsius per year.
In some places, lakes have been warming by as much as 0.10 degree Celsius per year. At that rate,a
lake may warm by a full degree Celsius in just 10 years. That difference may seem small一you might not
even notice it in your bath. But in a lake, slightly warmer temperatures could mean more algae(水藻),and
algae can make the lake poisonous to fish.
The study shows that in some regions, lakes are warming faster than the air around them. This is impor-
tant because scientists often use measurements of air temperature to study how Earth is warming. By using
lake temperatures as well, scientists can get a better picture of global warming. The scientists say data on
lakes give scientists a new way to measure the impact of climate change around the world.
That's going to be useful, since no country is too big or too small to ignore climate change.Scientists
aren't the only ones concerned.Everyone who lives on Earth is going to be affected by the rapid warming of
the planet. Many world leaders believe we might be able to do something about it,especially by reducing the
amount of greenhouse(温室)gases we put into the air.
That's why the United Nations started the Framework Convention on Climate Change,or UNFCCC.
Every year the convention meets, and representatives from countries around the world gather to talk about
climate change and discuss global solutions to the challenges of a warming world.

UNFCCC's annual meeting will be held in Mexico this year.
    A:Right
    B:Wrong
    C:Not mentioned

    Batteries Built by Viruses
What do chicken pox,the common cold, the flu,and AIDS have in common? They're all diseases caused by viruses, tiny microorganisms that can pass from person to person. It's no wonder that when most people think about viruses, finding ways to steer clear of viruses is what's on people's minds.
Not everyone runs from the tiny disease carriers, though. In Cambridge,Massachu- setts, scientists have discovered that some viruses can be helpful in an unusual way. They are putting viruses to work, teaching them to build some of the world's smallest rechargeable batteries.
Viruses and batteries may seem like an unusual pair, but they're not so strange for engi-neer Angela Beicher, who first came up with the idea. At the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology(MIT)in Cambridge, she and her collaborators bring together different areas of science in new ways.In the case of the virus-built batteries, the scientists combine what they know about biology, technology and production techniques.
Beicher's team includes Paula Hammond, who helps put together the tiny batteries, and
Yet-Ming Chiang,an expert on how to store energy in the form of a battery.“We're working on things we traditionally don't associate with nature,”says Hammond.
Many batteries are already pretty small. You can hold A,C and D batteries in your hand. The coin-like batteries that power watches are often smaller than a penny. However, every year, new electronic devices like personal music players or cell phones get smaller than the year before. As these devices shrink, ordinary batteries won't be small enough to fit in-side.
The ideal battery will store a lot of energy in a small package. Right now,Belcher's model battery,a metallic disk completely built by viruses, looks like a regular watch battery. But inside, its components are very small一so tiny you can only see them with a powerful microscope.
How small are these battery parts? To get some idea of the size, pluck one hair from your head. Place your hair on a piece of white paper and try to see how wide your hair is一 pretty thin, right?Although the width of each person's hair is a bit different, you could probably fit about 10 of these virus-built battery parts, side to side, across one hair. These micro-batteries may change the way we look at viruses.

Which of the following is true of Belcher's battery mentioned in paragraph 6?
A: It is made of metal.
B: It is a kind of watch battery.
C: It can only be seen with a microscope.
D: It is a metallic disk with viruses inside it.

What do chicken pox, the com-mon cold, the flu,and AIDS have in common? They're all diseases caused by viruses(与vi-rus-related diseases呼应),tiny microorganisms that can pass from person to person. It's no wonder that when most people think about viruses, finding ways to steer clear of viruses is what's on people's minds.
利用题干及备选项中的细节信息词/短语Belcher's team , at present , ways , mass-producing micro-batteries , virus genes作为定位线索,在第二段和第三段中找到相关句:(第二段)Not everyone runs from the tiny dis-ease carriers, though. In Cambridge,Massachusetts, scientists have discovered that some vi-ruses can be helpful in an unusual way. They are putting viruses to work, teachiig them to build some if the world's smallest rechargeable batteries.(第三段)Viruses and batteries may seem like an unusual pair, but they're not so strange for engineer Angela Belcher, who first came up with the idea.At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)in Cambridge, she and her collaborators(与Belcher's team呼应)bring together different areas of science in new ways. In the case of the virus-built batteries, the scientists combine what they know a-bout biology, technology and production techniques. 该句中提到的“这一想法”回指上文(第二段)中提到的putting viru-ses to work, teaching them to build some of the world's smallest rechargeable batteries,即用病毒制造世界上最小的充电电池。
The ideal battery will store a lot of energy in a small package. Right now,Belcher's model battery,a metallic disk completely built by viru-ses,looks like a regular watch battery. But inside, its components are very small一so tiny you can only see them with a powerful microscope.

D:Then begins the world's biggest food fight.
E:Some people have fun imagining new holidays.
F:Jokes are supposed to be funny, but these jokes do not make everyone laugh.

    but(可是,但是)承上启下,转折。these jokes(这些恶作剧),说明前一句肯定有jokes(玩笑)这个词。not...laugh(不……
    Then(然后,接着),起承上启下作用。(应注意:该词引导的是一个全倒装句,“the world's biggest food fight”是主语,“begins”是谓语)。the world's biggest food fight
    They(他们;指人,复数);him(他;指人或动物)。
    That(这一或那一),代词,指代前一句中的某个名词。

True Friendship-Recognition How can we find true friendship in this often phony, temporary world? Friendship involves recognition or familiarity with another's personality. Friends often share likes and dislikes, interests, pursuits, and passion. How can we recognize potential friendship? Signs include a mutual desire for companionship and perhaps a common bond of some kind. Beyond that, genuine friendship involves a shared sense of caring and concern, a desire to see one another grow and develop, and a hope for each other to succeed in all aspects of life. True friendship involves action: doing something for someone else while expecting nothing in return; sharing thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement or negative criticism. True Friendship-Relationship, Trust, Accountability True friendship involves relationship. Those mutual attributes we mentioned above become the foundation in which recognition transpires into relationship. Many people say, "Oh, he's a good friend of mine," yet they never take time to spend time with that "good friend. "Friendship takes time: time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other's growth. Trust is essential to true friendship. We all need someone with whom we can share our lives, thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone, without worrying that those secrets will end up on the Internet the next day! Failing to be trustworthy with those intimate secrets can destroy a friendship in a hurry. Faithfulness and loyalty are keys to true friendship. Without them, we often feel betrayed, left out, and lonely. In true friendship, there is no backbiting, no negative thoughts ,no turning away. True friendship requires certain accountability factors. Real friends encourage one another and forgive one another where there has been an offense. Genuine friendship supports during times of struggle. Friends are dependable. In true friendship, unconditional love develops. We love our friends no matter what and we always want the best for our friends. Sometimes we need to be alone.()

Passage 2Americans don't like to lose wars. Of course,a lot depends on how you define just what a war is. There are shooting wars-the kind that test patriotism and courage-and those are the kind at which the U.S. excels. But other struggles test those qualities too. What else was the Great Depression or the space race or the construction of the railroads? If American indulge in a bit of flag-when the job is done, they earned it.Now there is a similar challenge-global warming. The steady deterioration of the very climate of this very planet is becoming a war of the first order, and by any measure, the U.S. is losing. Indeed, if America is fighting at all, it's fighting on the wrong side. The U.S. produces nearly a quarter of the world's greenhouse gases each year and has stubbornly made it clear that it doesn't intend to do a whole lot about it. Although 174 nations approved the admittedly flawed Kyoto accords to reduce carbon levels, the U.S. walked away from them. There are vague promises of manufacturing fuel from herbs or powering cars with hydrogen. But for a country that tightly citespatriotism as one of its core values, the U.S. is taking a pass on what might be the most patriotic struggle of all. It's hard to imagine a bigger fight than one for the survival of a country's coasts and farms, the health of its people and stability of its economy. The rub is, if the vast majority of people increasingly agree that climate change is a global emergency, there's far less agreement on how to fix it. Industry offers its plans, which too often would fix little. Environmentalists offer theirs, which too often amount to native wish lists that could weaken America's growth. But let's assume that those interested parties and others will always bent the table and will always demand that their voices be heard and that their needs be addressed. What would an aggressive, ambitious, effective plan look like-one that would leave the U.S. both environmentally safe and economically sound?Halting climate change will be far harder. One of the more conservative plans for addressing the problem calls for a reduction of 25 billion tons of carbon emissions over the next 52 years. And yet by devising a consistent strategy that mixes short-time profit with long-range objective and blends pragmatism with ambition, the U.S. can, without major damage to the economy, help halt the worst effects of climate change and ensure the survival of its way of life for future generations. Money will do some of the work, but what's needed most is will.I'm not saying the challenge isn't almost overwhelming, says Fred Krupp. But this is America, and America has risen to these challenges before. From the last sentence of Paragraph 2,we may learn that the survival of a country's coasts and farms, the health of its people and the stability of its economy is________.

Lakes seem to be warming faster in Asia.
    A:Right
    B:Wrong
    C:Not mentioned

    答案:C

    The Privileged Children

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world of wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoons can leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a sign of happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves.
Dr. Robert Coles,an internationally famous doctor,is the world's top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject,The Privileged Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little."Ohviously there are certain advantages to being rich,"says the 53-year-old doctor,"such as better health, education and future work expectations. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can't buy love."
It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that's where the trouble starts.Rich kjds have so much to choose from that they often become confused.Their parents' over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless.
"But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,"adds Mr Coles, "and they are more self-assured."
Today's rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So their priority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

    Dr. Robert Coles believes that________.
A:being rich has as many advantages as being poor
B:rich children often get too little entertainment
C:rich children sometimes can't enjoy the thing they are most in need of
D:rich children aren't given enough things

How tiny is one battery part?
A: Its width is one tenth of a hair.
B: It equals the width of a hair.
C: It is as thin as a piece of paper.
D: Its width is too tiny to measure.

    答案:A
What do chicken pox, the com-mon cold, the flu,and AIDS have in common?

    Some Unusual Celebrations

Some holidays are well-known all around the world.Among them are New Year's Eve celebrations. Also

too, often to mark important events in its history. Schools, banks, and government offices all close on days like
these.__________(46)A few of them are really very strange.
Of course, they are not strange to the people who celebrate them.Perhaps that is because the celebra-
tions have long traditions.Consider April Fool's Day,for example. No one knows when or why it began.Today
it is celebrated in many countries一France,England, and Australia, among others. On this day, people play
practical jokes.___________(47)The ones who laugh are the ones playing the jokes. The people they fool often

Dyngus Day in Poland seems strange, too. On this day,it is traditional for boys to pour water over the
heads of girls. Here is the strangest part:They do it to girls they like.
Other unusual celebrations take place in a single city or town. A holiday called La Tomatina is celebrated
in Bunol,Spain一 Every year,in late August, big trucks carry more than 200,000 pounds of tomatoes into this
little town.___________(48)For two hours, people in the streets throw tomatoes at each other. Everyone

August 10 marks the start of the Puck Fair,an Irish festival with a very unusual tradition.People from
the town of Killorglin go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat._________(49)
There are also some celebrations that are really strange. In the United States, sometimes one person gets
an idea for a new holiday and tries to get others to accept it. Whose idea was Public Sleeping Day? That one is
on February 28.It may seem strange, but it sounds like more fun than the one on February 9._________(50)
Do you like the idea of inventing a new holiday? If you do,then you will want to mark March 26 on
your calendar. That is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day.

    ___________(47)
A:They bring him back to town, put a crown on his head, and make him king for three days.
B:Some of the days people celebrate, however, are less serious.
C:That is supposed to be Toothache Day.
D:Then begins the world's biggest food fight.
E:Some people have fun imagining new holidays.
F: Jokes are supposed to be funny, but these jokes do not make everyone laugh.

    答案:F

E:Most managers spend their time making it difficult for workers to work.
F:Also,Semco lets its workers use the company's machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.

    答案:A
因此选A。

F: Also,Semco lets its workers use the company's machines for their own projects, and makes them take holidays for at least thirty days a year.

Trust is essential to true friendship.()

What is the author's attitude towards America's policies on global warming?
