Directions: In this section you sill hear a mini-lecture. You will hear the lecture ONCE ONLY. While listening, take notes on the important points. Your notes will not be marked, but you will need them to complete a gap-filling task after the mini-lecture. When the lecture is over, you will be given two minutes to check your notes, and another ten minutes to complete the gap-filling task on ANSWER SHEET ONE. Use the blank sheet for note-taking.

听力原文: Good morning, everyone. First about your second assignment. I'd like to remind you that your second assignment should be in by next Fri day. You can either put it in my pigeon hole, or leave it with the Department's secretary. Now, let's get down to the lecture.

Today, the lecture is on credit, er, or to be more specific, on credit cards. I'm sure you must have heard of some credit cards, like the VI SA card, which is an internationally used card, or the Great Wall card issued by the Bank of China, In order to give a better understanding, we'll discuss it in some detail.

Many businesses, such as department stores, restaurants, hotels and airline companies, use a credit system for selling their products and services. In a credit system, the seller agrees to sell something to the buyer without immediately receiving cash. He receives the goods or ser vices immediately and promises to pay for them later. This buy-now-pay later credit system is quite old.

There are two types of credit cards. One type is issued directly by a store to a customer. Many large department stores issue credit cards to their customers. The store credit card can be used to make purchases only at a particular store. For example, if you have a credit card from Store A, then you can only buy things in that store. Other stores would not accept it. The other kind of credit card is issued by a credit company. Credit cards from credit companies can be used to buy things almost anywhere. If you have a major credit card, you can buy airplane tickets, stay at hotels and eat at restaurant with it. Most large credit companies are connected to large banks. So if you want a credit card from a credit company, you generally have to make an application at a bank. After an applicant receives a credit card, he or she can make purchases using the

card.

The credit company sends the customer a statement of purchases at the end of each month. Generally the customer has to pay 25--50% of their credit hill every month. The customer pays directly to the credit company and the credit company pays to the store or hotel or restaurant.

There are some advantages and some disadvantages to using credit cards. The biggest advantage for the consumer is expressed by the phrase "buy now, pay later". This means that the consumer can purchase what he wants when he wants it. There is no need to save up money in advance. Another advantage of having a credit card is that it protects the owner, ff a credit card is lost or stolen, the owner only has to call the credit company and the credit company will stop the credit card number. No one else can use it. So the owner doesn't have to worry about losing the card. Another advantage of the credit card system is that the consumer receives a record of his or her purchases. Every month the credit customer receives a bill. The bill has a list of all purchases from that month. This makes it easier to remember when and where purchases are made. And another advantage is that credit cards can be used when something unexpected happens. Many kinds of professional people—plumbers, taxidrivers, doctors and dentists—will accept credit cards in an emergency. This is very important if you don't have any cash with you.

However, having said all that, using credit cards has one major disadvantage. That is, consumers tend to overspend their money. They spend more than they make. If a consumer buys a lot of th

Failure to do this is called plagiarism which is a form. of intellectual dishonesty.(33)Plagiarism is a kind of stealing or at least an unauthorized borrowing of someone else's ideas. Sometimes inexperienced students will plagiarize unintentionally, and then be surprised when the teacher won't accept their papers, or gives them a failing grade. The best way to avoid an unintentional plagiarizing is to be very careful in gathering your information. As you take notes on books and magazine articles about the topic you've selected, first try to assimilate the information thoroughly. (34)Secondly, write it down in your own words. This is called paraphrasing. If you do a good job of paraphrasing, you'll capture the main idea from your source without actually using any phrases from it. (34)Most of your notes should probably be paraphrases. However, occasionally you may find something you wish to quote directly in your research paper. In this Case, (35)be sure that you copy the quotation precisely in your notes and enclose it in quotation marks. That way when you're finalizing your research paper, you'll be able to remember which of your notes are direct quotes and which are your own summaries of the material. You can then incorporate them appropriately and give the original author proper credit.(33)A.Reading magazine articles.B.Reviewing book reports.C.Writing research papers.D.Selecting information sources.

This bar chart shows mobilephone subscriptions in developing countries and developed countries, measured in billions, for the years 2000 to 2008.The mobilephone subscriptions in both developing countries and developed countries enjoyed increase in different speed over time.In this chart, the mobilephone subscription in developed countries maintained a continual and steady increase from 2000 to 2007 and remained constant in 2008.Meanwhile,the mobilephone subscription in developing countries have undergone a slow increase from 2000 to 2004 and then saw a great surge from 2005 to 2007.This trend increased to a peak about 4 billion in 2008.Based on different national situations, the reasons leading to this trend can be summarized into two points.First, the developed countries have a limited number of population, which decides that the demand for mobilephone service is also limited and will soon be saturated.Second,as for the developing countries,it has a large population and also a large demand for mobilephone service. And as the mobilephone becomes more available and more affordable, there is an increasing number of people buying their mobilephones. In my view, this trend that the number of mobilephone subscription continues to grow in developing countries will be constant for a while in the future. And this trend would also benefit most of the mobile users both in the developing countries and developed countries.

As Iraq struggles to recover from conflict and severe economic hardship to a society that is once again able to stand on its own two feet, the United nations has convened a meeting on 23, June to ensure that the Iraqis immediate humanitarian needs are met and the transition to longer-term reconstruction is fully underway by the beginning of the next year.
Indeed, such actions and achievements in responding to anticipated humanitarian needs in Iraq have played a crucial role in averting a much larger potential crisis. Even as the conflict was underway, national UN staff continued to carry out their duties. Aid activities under the Oil for Food Programme in Iraq’s three northern govern orates never stopped.1 National staff of the World Food Programme worked to open corridors from Turkey, Jordan and Iran into Iraq.2UNICEF local staff delivered humanitarian supplies and worked to maintain the supply of potable water.3WHO local staff supported Iraqi health professionals.4 Under the Oil for Food Programme, UNDP worked to maintain and restore electric power supplies, especially in the north.5
As of today, more than 800, 000 metric tonnes of food—enough to feed almost all of Iraq’s 27 million people for two months have been dispatched to Iraq.6 An average of 3.5 million litres of water per day is being tankered7 to hospitals, health centres and communities in the south and in the Baghdad area. Basic medicines, vaccines and health supplies have been delivered8 to facilities throughout the country. Agencies have helped repair and restore water, sanitation and power facilities, as well as schools, which have also been receiving essential education supplies.
But great needs remain. Due to the lack of a functioning economy, combined with prolonged reliance on the ration system, virtually all of the population of Iraq will require food aid in the short run in order to survive.9 The Flash Appeal for Iraq, asking for$2. 2 billion to cover needs for six months, was issued in March. Generous donor funding (approximately$900 million), and access to the resources of the Oil for Food Programme ($1. 1 billion), have meant that $2 billion is already available for humanitarian aid for the people of Iraq. The revised humanitarian appeal for Iraq seeks to meet the needs of the Iraqi people up to the end of the year. Given the healthy funding status, only an additional US $259 million is required.
Food aid alone accounts for two-thirds of the aid being requested through the Appeal. While the food sector, accounting for some $1.56 billion, is fully funded,10 funding is still required for equally important interventions in other sectors. Most essential needs must be still met: health care; clean water and sanitation; electricity; infrastructure repair; shelter; mine action and mine awareness; education; food security and agriculture; assistance for internally displaced persons and returning refugees. Given the urgent needs in other parts of the world in much of Africa, Afghanistan, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as well as other places, it is essential that donor countries ensure that contributions to Iraq are in addition to and not in place of— funding for other emergencies.

If you don’t have much experience of making phone calls in English, making a business call can be a worrying experience. Most business people, unless they feel very confident, prepare for an important phone call in a foreign language by making notes in advance. And during the call they make notes while they’re talking to help them to remember what was said. Although it’s quick and convenient to phone someone to give them information or to ask questions, the disadvantage is that there is nothing in writing to help you to remember what was said. It’s essential to make notes and often when an agreement is reached on the phone, one of the speakers will send a fax or e-mail to confirm the main points that were made. Because it’s so easy to be misunderstood when talking on the phone, it’s a good idea to repeat any important information (especially numbers and names) back to the other person to make sure you’ve got it right. Always make sure you know the name of the person you’re talking to. If necessary, ask them to spell it out to you, so that you can make sure you’ve got it right----and try to use their name during the call. And make sure that they know your name too.

Above all know your audience and match what you say to their needs.Creating your presentation with your audience in mind will assure that your audience will follow you.If your presentation doesn't appeal to your audience-no matter how well you have developed your presentation--your presentation will fall on deaf ears. This leads us to the next rule:Know your material thoroughly.Your material needs to be second nature to you.Practice and rehearse your presentation with friends,in front of a mirror, and with colleagues. If you are speaking in a second language, make sure that you record yourself and listen to a number of times before going to practice with a native speaker(if possible).
Remember that you are an actor when presenting.Make sure that not only your physical appearance is appropriate to the occasion, but also the tone you use is well chosen. If your topic is serious,be solemn. However,it's always a good idea to begin your presentation with an ice-breaker.Don't worry about making friends, rather lead the audience through your materials in a calm and relaxed manner.Speak slowly and clearly, and remember to address everyone in the audience-even the person the farthest away from you.
To achieve the above goals follow these tips when giving your presentation:
●Speak with conviction.Believe what you are saying and you will persuade your audience.
●Do not read from notes.Referring to notes is fine, but do so only briefly.
●Maintain eye contact with your audience.Making direct eye contact with individuals will help them feel as if they are participating in your presentation.
●Bring handouts.Don't just use a PowerPoint presentation.Provide audience members with handouts of the most important materials so they can keep your most
    important takeaways in mind.
●Know when to stop. This cannot be underestimated. You need to make your case, but continuing for too long will only ensure that the audience forgets what you have said.
