Practice 1 Directions: Read five students’ talks about traveling around Europe using an Inter-Rail ticket. The ticket allows people under the age of twenty-six to travel wherever they want within Europe for one month. For questions 1 to 5, match the name of each student (1 to 5) to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET. Patrlcia: I went by Inter-Rail this summer with a group of friends from university. I think it  worked very well, although a few of them said they’d never do it again--I guess it wasn’t  quite like they thought it was going to be--not as comfortable probably. We usually slept in  hostels or on the train so we were completely exhausted but I think we had a great time. Next year 1’11 see if I can perhaps visit fewer places and not get so worn out. Davis: I traveled about 6,000 kilometers in four weeks with a couple of friends from college. We spent weeks planning out the route and all the places we were intending to go to. Would I do it again? Well, I’d have to think carefully about that but, on the whole the trip was good for me as I was the official translator, which was great as I’m normally a bit shy of talking to people I don’t know. On the last night of the holiday they treated me to a really expensive meal for helping them out. It was terrific! Jenise: Well, I guess I had a good time now” when I look back on it, and I saw eight countries in four weeks. Everything went well but I think that from now on I’ll probably choose to do something else. I want to meet local people rather than just people who work for the train service! I did get to know quite a few other English and American students and they were great but it didn’t do much for my French and German. Nigel: I think it’s definitely the best way of getting around Europe even though you have to spend money on the Inter-Rail ticket before you leave. I have a friend who hitch-hikes and he says that’s the only way to travel because it’s free and you see more interesting places. But I knew I could jump on a train wherever I wanted in the morning, while he would still be standing in the rain hoping for a lift. So all in all I think I got the better deal, especially as I could take the night train and save on hotel bills. Hawk: I’ve done it quite a few times now and I’m used to the kind of problems that arise-like having to sleep in a park because the train arrived too late for me to get a hostel bed, and trying to keep to a tight budget. The mistake people often make is to just get off at the tourist spots. Try getting off the train at the little villages, like I do. They’re usually fascinating and the people are friendlier, too. Even if they don’t understand your miserable attempt at their language they still smile and nod. Now match each of the students (1 to 5) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements

    2.Please introduce yourself.

1.In my teaching design, I mainly use two exercises to help students consolidate the grammar knowledge. One is distinguishing the appositive clause from other kinds of clauses, the other one is filling in the blanks. Aside from these two methods, I think I can also use making sentences or correcting the mistakes in clauses to train students’ understanding of the new knowledge. Anyway, we should make decisions according to the current status of our students.

2.I am very glad to stand here to make a short self-introduction. As a student who majoring in English, I possess a strong interest in English and the culture of English-speaking countries. Plus, I have been dreaming to become a teacher since I was in primary school. From my point of view, teaching English to students just like constructing a bridge between their little world and the broad outside space. That’s why I participate in this test and I truly hope to fulfill my dream. Thank you.

Directions: Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. What′s your view about what subject university students should study? You are required to write a composition within 180 words, but no less than 150 words.

People have different views about what subject university students should study, whether the one they like or only the one that will be useful in the future. People who believe students should only study subjects that will be useful in the future list several reasons. First, university courses like medicine, engineering and information technology can provide more job opportunities, career progression, better salaries, and therefore an improved quality of life for students who take them. Second, those subjects play the major role in new inventions, economic growth, and the society' s greater future prosperity. As far as I am concerned, university students should be free to choose their preferred subjects. In my opinion, students can study well if the learning content caters to their interest. Besides, the creative thinking patterns behind some theoretical subjects have potential value. In this sense, more students of art, history and philosophy are needed. In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for students to focus only on the most useful subjects, I personally assert that they have the right to study whatever they like.

Topic 2:My View on College Students’ Use of Mobile Phones Questions for reference: 1) What is the phenomenon of college students’ using mobile phones? 2) What might be the advantages and disadvantages of their using mobile phones? 3) What could be done to this problem?

My name is... My registration number is... My topic is: My View on College Students’ Use of Mobile Phones.
China is becoming a country with the biggest population of mobile phone subscribers and an increasing number of college students are joining the existing users. Statistics show that eight out of ten college students have got one. However, is it necessary for a college student to own a mobile phone?
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong for a college student to have a cell phone, with is, students will be better connected with friends and parents. What’s more, mobile phones play an important role in graduates’ job-hunting. Therefore, instead of banning the use of mobile phones, schools should take measures to guide an appropriate use of them on campus, For example, students are required to switch off their phones in classrooms and under no circumstances should they use a mobile phone during exams. In some public places, like libraries, a poster can be placed at the entrance to alert library users to switch their phones to vibration mode before they enter the library.
I believe mobile phones can bring benefits to our students as long as we can make good use of them.

Practice 1Directions: In this part of the test, you will answer three questions based on the information provided. You will have 30 seconds to read the information before the questions begin. For each question, begin responding immediately after you hear a beep. No additional preparation time is provided. You will have 15 seconds to respond to Questions 1 and 2 and 30 seconds to respond to Question 3.Practice 1 Question 1: How much are tickets? Question 2: I heard Time Against Time was coming out. Is it playing there yet? Question 3: I might not be able to go to the theater until 7:30. Which movies are playing at around that time?

1: It’s eight dollars and ninety-five cents for adult tickets. And for kids, it’s five dollars and ninety-five cents.
或:An adult ticket is eight ninety-five and a ticket for a child is five ninety-five.
本题问How much…
2:Yes, it is playing in the theater, and it plays at several different times.
或:Yes, it is being shown at the theater at present.
3:Well, you have many choices. At seven forty, Geneva is playing and five minutes later, Whispers in the Silence is playing. And a little bit later, at ten to eight, Rabbit Stew is going to start.
或:At seven forty we’re showing Geneva, and Whispers in the Silence will start five minutes later. You could also see Rabbit Stew at seven fifty.
7:40 twenty to eight;7:45 quarter to eight;7:50 ten to eight。

Practice 1 Directions: Read the texts from a magazine article in which five business leaders talked about their predictions for high-tech developments in the 21st century. For Questions 1 to 5, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Maguel de Icaza: Free software benefits people, countries and companies by giving them complete control of the software on which they depend. This is helping close the digital divide between developed and underdeveloped countries. People who previously might never have had access to this sort of technology are already leading the efforts to bring it to the developing world. Free software is the foundation on which a fairer future and a more efficient economy is being built. Austin Hill: Welcome to the future. Your mobile phone tracks your location, your interactive TV records your viewing habits. Privacy is to the information age what environmentalism was to the industrial age. Businesses will protect themselves, and their customers, by introducing privacy-promoting technologies and building better data controls into every aspect of their operation. A leading class of privacy protectors will emerge in every industry, and both they and their customers will reap the rewards of the ethical privacy brand. Ng Ede Phang: This will be the year that plain old text e-mail sits up and starts talking--and talking a lot. The human voice is powerful weapon. An e-mail doesn’t tell me whether you’re happy, sad or excited, whereas lnternet voice services provide all these key emotional characteristics. The human voice adds a very powerful element to business relationships that e-mail just cannot match. Murray Goldman: For those of us who live on airplanes, a key decision is which electronic devices to carry on a trip. The future is in the appropriate combination of communications and computing devices. Many business travelers will require the full computing power of a personal computer, with a screen large enough to do intensive work. As a result, lightweight notebooks have been introduced to the market with innovative options such as built-in DVDs, cameras and wireless capabilities. Christine Karman: We’ll see agents on portals and community websites helping people trade goods and information. Venture capitalists are shifting from dotcoms to software and hardware companies. In Europe, that shift is hard to make because we don’t have a Silicon Valley from which lots of companies are conquering the world. As a consequence, the slowly emerging Internet and software industry in Europe may not survive. If I were starting a new software company now, I’d go to California or Boston. Now match the name of each person (1 to 5) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements

第一段第二句提到免费软件“is helping close the digital divide between developed and underdeveloped countries”,缩小差距就是为了让数字信息平等化,况且选项中只有F提到了免费软件。故选F。
2.C 整段都在讲隐私,说道“Businesses will protect themselves, and their customers,by introducing privacy-promoting technologies and building better data controls into every aspect of their operation”。
5.G 文中说欧洲的软硬件不行,“the slowly emerging Internet and software industry in Europe may not survive. If I were starting a new software company now,I'd go to California or Boston”,欧洲很难成为硬件和软件的生产地,也就是说欧洲和美国的数码差距很难 缩小,而且差距会进一步扩大。故选G。

Statements

正确答案: 1.F 第一段文章倒数第二句“We usually slept in hostels or on the train so we were completely exhausted but I think we had a great time.”
2.D 第二段第四句说“on the whole the trip was good for me as I was the official translator, which was great as I’m normally a bit shy of talking to people I don’t know.”
第二句“…I’ll probably choose to do something else.

Topic 4:Talk about Virtue Questions for reference: 1) What virtues can you name? 2) Which one do you think it the most important one? 3) What should we do in order to establish concept of honor and disgrace among people?

My name is... My registration number is... My topic is: Talk about Virtue.
We must uphold these core virtues including diligence, honesty, justice and responsibility. Traditionally, we Chinese admire the virtue of plain living and hard struggle. The vital importance is also placed on honesty and justice.
In my eyes, however, responsibility tops our priority. To shoulder some heavy responsibilities, we must keep a style of plain living and hard struggle. Responsibility also means honesty and justice. Everyone must assume a set of responsibilities. For example, we college students must take the responsibility for pursuing the impressive academic performance. But an army of students plant themselves in online games, an activity which compels them to shun huge responsibilities.
The virtue of responsibility is strongly associated with the “Eight Dos and Don’ts” moral campaign in full swing. Under this slogan, everyone must take on his/her own responsibilities and dedicate to his/her own position. Unquestionably, everyone must promote the socialist concept of honor and disgrace.

Directions: You are asked to write a composition in about 160 words and you should base your composition on the information given in English below: Some people criticize the students who invited their friends to dinners when they got their scholarship. They say that students should save scholarships for future studies, not just invite friend to dinners.1. Do you agree with the people? 2. Give at least two reasons to support you idea.

Scholarships Can Be Used for Fun I don't agree with the people, because I think spending scholarship having fun with friend is also a good choice.
Firstly by going to dinner together you can enjoy some happy time with your friends. The enlarged enrollment of university students results in fierce stresses and competition. Every day we students are driven to struggle for a happy and bright future like industrious donkeys and consequently have little time to enjoy the gentle perfume of friendship. But we are all human beings. We need not only successes in study, but also emotional contacts. How to satisfy this need? A little get-together of friends will do. Communication and mutual understanding can originate from eating and drinking. So spending scholarships on dinner is not a bad idea.
Secondly, having fun with your friends can reduce the stress that most college students encounter. College life is competitive and stressful, so many student suffer from sleeping or eating disorders. When you have dinner with your friends, you laugh, chat and add nutrients at the same time. It is good for both of your mental and physical health, so why not do it.
In a word, friendship and health is more important than money. So I will choose the former.

To Travel or Not Traveling has become a hot topic recently especially after too long a time of working or staying at home. People who like traveling believe that traveling is a learning experience which can expand their scope of knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning. And it is also a kind of relaxation good to their health. Free from office work or housework, people can enjoy a pleasant journey with delicious food, beautiful landscape, folk culture and fresh air, etc. Moreover, in terms of economic benefits, traveling can boost tourism, which is a multibillion-dollar industry that supports economic development of a country.
Those who dislike traveling think that traveling wastes a considerable amount of time, money and energy. For example, traffic and accommodation require money and walking while seeing sights often tires you. What’s more, they argue that traveling can increase the chance of being infected with some diseases and can cause damage to local environment and culture.
For me, I prefer traveling because traveling does more good than harm in practice. After a long time of working and studying, people need relaxation and traveling is the best choice. In an environment free from all kinds of routines, you will feel all the more relaxed and feel brimful of energy when you return to work or home.

Practice 4 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: In the past, people used to travel to see the differences from their home country. However, the sceneries in places around the world seem similar nowadays. What are the causes of these similarities? Do you think that the advantages of this similarity outweigh the disadvantages? You should write at least 250 words.

People who travel to different places aim to expand their horizons by witnessing distinct views in every unique culture and nation. However, there is a strange trend that many places of interest are looking similar.
Why do the scenic spots tend to be built into the same look? An arch-criminal is probably globalization, which makes the distance between nations shrink. Those developing countries are likely to imitate those who greatly succeed in developing tourism, which lead to flooding similarities. Secondly, it is a common phenomenon that people have a sense of security when they travel to a strange place, especially when they are in trouble or danger. Finding somewhere like their hometown comforts their moods and getting some spiritual consolation.
The question, however, is whether this situation is positive or negative for both tourists and residents. To begin with the positive one, through the comparison between different countries, the passion for establishing their national consciousnesses can be ignited. The more one sees in another world, the more he will think about his own living situations natively. From the other side, the same image all around the world leads to the extinction of diversified cultures, which reflect the  fulfilled with vivid colorful art and long-lasting historical stories. If the whole world looks uniformly the same, tourism disappears as well as all the regional conventions and treasures.
To conclude based on my personal experience of traveling domestically and abroad, I suggest that people had better see more and feel more in their very a limited lifetime. Even better, one should absorb more with the very soul that the native is the best of all.
