Jack is a famous writer now.But he said he was not a good student when he was young. He was often late for class and didn’t like doing his homework. Sometimes he slept in class while the teacher was teaching. He didn't understand much, but he always thought he under-stood everything..
One day the teacher asked the students a question, "When John was ten years old, his brother was twenty. John is fifteen now and how old is his brother?" Jack answered, "That's easy. His brother is twice as old as John, so he is now thirty. "
Another time, the teacher in a science class asked, "When it thunders(打雷) , why do we always see the light before we hear the sound? "But, Miss White," said Jack quickly, "can't you .see our eyes are in front of our ears?"
The third time, the teacher in a biology class asked, "Why can fish swim in the water?" "But, Miss White," said Jack quickly, "don't you know fish can-t walk on land?"

Open Letter to an Editor
I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently---one who works for you. In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.
Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume (简历) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.
So why is he looking for a way out?
He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.
The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.
He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?
So your reporter has set me thinking.
Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists---everyone--is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can't do it, they'll find someone who can.

Before, I thought that a man who was wise and good would become rich, but now I know this is not always true. I learned it from my teacher. He is both wise and good, but he is not rich at all. He may become rich if he gives up(放弃) teaching and goes into business. But he likes his job and thinks it,s wonderful to help young people. He stays at school from morning till night and works very hard. He always smiles at us when we go to ask him for help. He is kinder to us than any other teacher in our school. I think it must be easier to learn history or math than to learn how to become a man like him. He scolds(责备 ) us when we do something wrong, but it makes us try to do better. We all wish to study with him as long as possible. But that may be impossible. Some of us may become doctors, some become businessmen, some be- come engineers, some become writers, but we all want one thing very much. It is that we all want to be teachers in the future.

A lot of us lose life’s tough battles by starting a frontal attack—when a touch of humor might well enable us to win.Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum about being late on the job.Although there was a good reason for Sam’s a being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes,the boss was.Sam entered the office at 9:35.The place was as quiet as a locker room;everyone was hard at work.Sam’s supervisor came up to him.Suddenly,Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand.“How do you do!” he said.“I’m Sam Maynard.I’m applying for a job, which,I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago.Does the early bird get the worm?”
The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office.Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could win,a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”,criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs,it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
